Modern medicine depends on radiology and imaging services for establishing informed treatment plans. As a medical provider, you need resources that support your practice. Our facility provides accurate, dependable and convenient imaging resources for you and your patients.
The “Healthy Person Program” Uses Innovative Technology to Identify Incidental Findings of Potentially Life-Threatening Conditions Our hospital is…
Many clinicians consider fluoroscopy an antiquated tool, but CT scans can cause harmful side effects. Ultrasounds also have their limitations. Doctors need guidance on which test to recommend for diagnosing specific digestive conditions.
Over the past couple of decades, the clinical use of fluoroscopy has declined significantly. So, is it still an essential diagnostic modality? Many emerging physicians say, “No,” discounting it as a viable resource.
Radiology testing uses radiant energy to take pictures and visualize many body parts. Our radiologists use these tests to determine a diagnosis and evaluate treatment. Here are some of the tools and tests we use to help establish care plans for your patients.
Mammography is an X-ray used to detect and diagnose breast concerns. With equipment dedicated to these breast exams, we provide high-quality, low-dose radiation to evaluate breast problems, such as a lump, pain or nipple drainage.
Nuclear imaging is one of the least invasive and most detailed scans for diagnosing and monitoring various treatments. This safe and effective testing utilizes a radioactive tracer for clear visualization. A medical professional typically administers the tracer intravenously.
Your patients may be concerned about the terminology “nuclear” or “radioactive,” but patients need to understand that this test is safe, effective and has no side effects. Additionally, the amount of radiation administered is minimal. Common conditions that can benefit from nuclear imaging are the following:
After the tracer collects in the tissue, a radiation detector produces digital signals, which are stored on a computer and can be generated to film. Our facility is committed to establishing a safe environment, and our radiologists are available to answer any questions.
A CT scanner is a powerful imaging tool. CT images of the body are reconstructed into three different planes allowing the physician to see anatomy from three different viewpoints. Starr Regional Medical Center – Athens completed an upgrade to its CT scanner in April 2024. The new scanner provides high quality images and offers a larger bore, the space where the patient lies during a scan, and an increased weight limit of 500 lbs. The upgraded technology allows radiology technologists to perform additional scans to support cardiovascular health.
The Athens campus added a new MRI scanner in November 2024. The upgraded scanner offers improved image quality and patient comfort. It features a larger bore, the space where the patient lies during a scan, and an increased weight limit of 550 lbs. With improved efficiency, scans are completed in less time, decreasing the time a patient must wait for an appointment. Software upgrades implemented in June 2025 increased MRI capabilities at Starr Regional Medical Center’s Athens campus, including MRI breast, prostate and enterography (intestines).
MRI scans can show subtle changes in the body caused by cancer and other diseases. Brain imaging with MR is superior to other diagnostic tools and it’s also excellent for orthopedic applications such as shoulders for rotator cuff tear, football or sports injuries, and multiple spine pathologies. No special preparation is necessary for this painless, non-invasive procedure other than removal of all metal jewelry and objects from your body.
Ultrasound is a non-radioactive tool used to evaluate abdominal organs, vascular flow, fetal age/size, as well as heart functions. Starr Regional Medical Center also offers ultrasound elastography exams of the liver to aid in diagnosing specific conditions.
We often think of ultrasound during prenatal care. Besides monitoring the uterus, ovaries, and embryos during pregnancy, this test can be used for many other reasons.
Our well-trained and personable sonographers understand how to manipulate this technology and can put your patients at ease.
Our medical staff uses X-rays, or radiographs, for a wide range of injuries, diseases and disorders. Your patients can receive radiographs with or without contrast. Though this test uses a small amount of radiation, it is considered safe for all ages, including babies. However, pregnant women should avoid X-rays as they can harm the growing embryo.
Radiology testing has become commonplace for medical professionals. We depend on detailed imaging to make informed diagnoses and treatment plans. However, our team understands that tests can cause fear and anxiety for your patients. That’s why we’re committed to listening and providing compassionate care.
Our radiology specialists provide a wide range of imaging procedures. We aim to deliver detailed imaging to your practice while providing your patient with a kind and caring experience. Our radiologists and technologists are truly extraordinary.
We have partnered with Vista Radiology to provide radiology services. Now we can offer turn-around times on scan results timelier to our patients and a radiologist is available 24/7.
