Referral considerations

Respiratory conditions that may require advanced pulmonary services include:

• Shortness of breath
• Chronic cough

LDCT lung cancer screening

Lung cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.* But low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans can detect lung cancer early. Providers should refer these patients for an LDCT scan:

• History of smoking 20 packs or more per year and
• Currently smoke or have quit smoking within the past 15 years and
• Age 50 – 80

LDCT scans have proven to lower patients’ risk of dying from lung cancer. Timely LDCT screening can be the difference between early treatment and late-stage diagnosis.
